‘We’re kind of filming!’ Legendary sketch show set for a reboot as lead star confirms return – 20 year after final episode

A legendary sketch show is set for a reboot after on of the the lead stars confirmed its upcoming return on Wednesday.

Smack The Pony could be making a comeback 20 year after final episode as Fiona Allen revealed they ‘are king of filming’ in a recent interview.

The actress, 57, did not divulge when the series could hit TV screens but added that it would be ‘great to see another one.’

Speaking to The Sun, Fiona said: ‘Wouldn’t it be great to see another one? We’re kind of filming, talking, that would be something fun.’

Smack The Pony briefly returned for 2017’s Red Nose Day, with the comic adding that she believes it will still do well with today’s audiences.

She continued: ‘It was fun and a lot of silliness, which I love, that was just our style I guess, and it worked really well and it cut across lots of different age groups.

‘And we genuinely enjoyed it, we used to be in trouble a lot for laughing. It gets shown all the time, it’s always showing up somewhere. So that’s quite nice.’

The Channel 4 comedy show ran for 23 episodes from 1999 until 2003 and featured Fiona, Doon Mackichan and Sally Phillips as the main characters.

Most of the characters in the show were non-reoccurring with themes including unsuccessful dating, irritating flatmates and workplace troubles.

The series won three Emmy Awards for Best Popular Arts Show and all three season’s received a nomination for a Bafta.

Sally, Fiona and Doon reunited to reprise some of their funniest characters with a modern-day twist for Comic Relief six years ago.

One of the show’s best-loved skits, which features Sally and Fiona as language students, was reprised – with Sally obsessively correcting ‘Spanish’ Fiona as she cried about her husband’s affair in the wrong tense.

A Smack The Pony reboot was previously rejected by broadcasters two years ago after Sally said she had pushed for its return.

She told Metro at the time: ‘We go through phases of pitching it to people and nobody really wants it.

‘Fiona Allen really is the engine behind that so she’s always seeing if anyone wants it and we have had gone through periods of pitching it to the channels and being very optimistic and then people saying no.

‘We pitched it the three of us together in lots of different environments and they’ve said no to that too,’ she revealed.
