Netflix divides fans as it ‘AXES a popular spin-off series after just one season’

Netflix left fans divided this week as it was revealed that comedy-drama Freeridge will reportedly not return for a second season.

The show, which is a spin off of popular series On My Block, only made it’s debut on the streaming platform in February.

Despite the massive success of its predecessor, Latina-led Freeridge appears to have lacked the same attraction, according to Rolling Stone.

Following siblings Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) and Ines (Bryana Salaz) and their friends Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson) and Cameron (Tenzing Norgay Trainor), the show sees the quartet deal with unleashing a curse bringing misfortune into their lives.

As the news broke, many viewers took to social media to share their thoughts, with some saddened by the news, while others agreed it didn’t live up to the original.

The show, which featured a full POC cast, had a mere eight-episode run and has been available on the streaming platform for less than two months.

MailOnline has contacted netflix for comment.

Many stars from On My Block featured, including Peggy Blow, who plays Mariluna, and Paula Garcés, Eric Gutierrez, Eme Ikwuakor, and Raushanah Simmons.

Some viewers were left devastated that the show’s run had been cut short, as one wrote: ‘The original is better but I actually liked Freeridge, at first I was like nah but then I noticed the nods they give to original characters’.

‘Dang, I enjoyed #freeridge,’ added another.

A third said: ‘I’m so upset! I LOVED On My Block and was so excited to start Freeridge :(‘

‘If they cancelled Freeridge, give us an On My Block reunion where they all come back and celebrate Dia De Los Muertos and honour Olivia, Mariluna, Marisol and Spooky,’ suggested another.

But not everyone was sad, or shocked, to see the series go, with one admitting: ‘I am saddened but can’t say I didn’t see this happening’.

‘They shouldn’t have made one in the first place,’ quipped another.

The cancellation comes after a huge shake-up from Netflix, with a slew of beloved films and TV shows set to leave the streaming service.

Blade Runner 2049, Big Daddy, The Social Network and iZombie are all amongst those which will leave the service on May 1st, 2023.
