The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially become the highest-grossing film adaptation of a video game of all time.

The Chris Pratt-starring animated movie has earned an impressive $508.7 million from worldwide audiences since it was released earlier this month, according to Variety.

The feature, which was boycotted by John Leguizamo for not having any Latin characters, has also become the highest-grossing film of 2023.

It was also reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had earned $260.3 million from domestic audiences, with another $248.4 million being brought in internationally.

The movie has become the second highest-earning animated film since 2019, with only Minions: The Rise of Gru coming out on top.

An animated film adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. series had been in the works ever since the mid-2010s.

A live-action film based on the franchise, which starred Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper, was released in 1993.

The feature was met with an overwhelmingly negative response upon its debut, although it has gained a cult following over the years.

Development on the animated film was officially confirmed in 2018, and Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic subsequently signed on to co-direct the project.

In addition to Pratt, who voices the Nintendo character, The Super Mario Bros. Movie starred Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black as Luigi, Princess Peach and Bowser, respectively.

Other performers associated with the project were Fred Armisen, Seth Rogen and Keegan-Michael Key.

Although The Super Mario Bros. Movie was originally scheduled to debut in 2022, it ultimately premiered on April 5.

The movie has since received mixed reviews from critics and currently holds a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes

Black spoke about the prospect of a sequel to the feature during a recent interview with GameSpot, where he stated that his character may not be the main antagonist in a potential follow-up movie.

‘It’s not a given that Bowser will return. You know, I did a few Kung Fu Panda movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing,’ he said.

The performer went on to reveal his pick for a potential antagonist, as well as his preferred voice actor.

He stated: ‘You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil…Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.’
