Wonka cast were entirely submerged in ‘enormous’ tanks of chocolate that ‘tasted every bit as good as they looked’

  • Wonka director Paul King revealed that a chocolatier was part of the film crew
  • Their work included creating a vat of hot chocolate to engulf some of the cast

Wonka’s director has revealed the cast were submerged in vats of real chocolate while making the movie.

Paul King has said a specialist chocolatier made the ‘enormous’ tank of hot chocolate for the stars, including Timothee Chalamet as the title character, to ‘immerse’ themselves in.

The news follows the release of the highly-anticipated first trailer for the prequel to the 1971 classic Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory.

King, who also directed the two Paddington movies, told People: ‘We actually made an enormous vat of hot chocolate – not scalding, just warm hot chocolate for them to immerse themselves in. So there was there a lot of chocolate around.

‘We had this incredible chocolatier. She made these incredible concoctions, and we would taste them.

‘They tasted much better than they needed to, because obviously actors are good at pretending things, but the miracle was they tasted every bit as good as they looked.’

One such concoction was a huge vat of the cocoa goodness used for a scene in which the title-character Willy Wonka and his friend Noodle, played by Calah Lane, are dunked within it.

An unusual addition to a film’s backstage production team; the recruit clearly impressed, with King saying that her creations miraculously ‘tasted every bit as good as they looked.’

As a result, it is unsurprising to learn that the cast and crew apparently ate an awful lot of the chocolate off-camera, with the director himself, for one, admitting to putting on 50 pounds over the course of production.

However, for the big star Chalamet was seemingly a different story.

King said it was a ‘miracle’ that his lead kept so thin, despite his best efforts to ‘fatten him up’.

The first trailer for the film, due for release on December 15, was unveiled earlier in July, and showed Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant, and Rowan Atkinson in their new roles alongside Chalamet and Lane.

Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, and Matt Lucas also feature in the all-star cast.
