Ministers are under pressure to ban ‘aggressive’ American bully dogs which have been blamed for a wave of vicious maulings.
Almost two thirds of Britons want the breed outlawed after a sharp rise in horrific attacks.
Bully dogs share genetic stock with banned pit bull terriers but have been cross-bred to add size and muscle. The largest weigh more than nine stone.
Dog attack campaigner Dr Lawrence Newport, who commissioned the poll, said bully dogs have been responsible for nine fatalities since 2021 – three of which were children.

Dr Newport added: ‘The American bully’s impact has been horrifying. If you argue these dogs are dangerous you will get a flood of comments saying it’s the owners’ fault. The reality is different.’
No UK dog association recognises the American bully, so the number on Britain’s streets is hard to establish.
Last week, The Mail on Sunday revealed almost 3,500 people needed reconstructive surgery following a dog attack during the past year – an 80 per cent rise from 15 years ago.
A Defra spokesman declined to say whether Ministers were considering a ban.
