Chelsea could be about to spend big on another midfielder after signing Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea would be willing to bid for Frenkie de Jong if the 26-year-old and Barcelona decide to part ways in the summer, according to Sport.

The same outlet claims that the Blues are prepared to pay around €100m (£85m) for his signature.

It is a lot of money for a midfielder, but Chelsea have not been afraid to spend big on players in that position.

The club broke their transfer record twice last year to bring Caicedo and Fernandez to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea willing to bid for Frenkie de Jong

Looking at how much money Chelsea spent on Caicedo and Fernandez, can you really rule out the club paying a big fee for De Jong? Probably not.

Honestly, though, the last thing Mauricio Pochettino needs right now is another expensive midfielder.

In the summer transfer window, what needs to be a priority for the Blues is a centre-forward.

Nicolas Jackson reminded everyone of his value on Wednesday after scoring in Chelsea’s 3-1 win against Aston Villa in the FA Cup. However, going into the 2024/25 season, the team need a more experienced and proven striker to reach their objectives.

They are currently 11th in the Premier League without one.

Paul Merson has tipped Chelsea to be in the running for Brentford’s Ivan Toney in the summer.

The above is not to say that De Jong is a bad midfielder. He is anything but, with his former manager Erik ten Hag describing him as an “incredible player”.

All in all, though, we just do not think he needs to be a priority for Chelsea in the next transfer window. If the Netherlands international does become available, it will be interesting to see what happens.
