Pundit Micah Richards has now named which variation of Chelsea in the Premier League era could stack up against the current crop of Manchester City players.
He told ‘The Rest is Football’ that he believes there is a Blues side that could compete with Pep Guardiola’s squad as a potential best team in the league’s history.
The Blues matched up with the defending champions at the weekend, and came very close to leaving Manchester with an astonishing victory.
They were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw, however individual performances from the likes of Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill were another suggestion that things were headed in the right direction for them.
However, over the long term it is clear very few sides cannot compete with Guardiola’s men, which is why they have been as successful as they have.
Richards was asked whether there were any sides in the history of the league who could be considered on a par with them right now.
He said: Richards: “It’s tough isn’t it because that Chelsea team that conceded ridiculously low goals that season didn’t they with John Terry.”

That Chelsea side are likely to never have their record taken off them of the amount of goals conceded in a season, with them averaging less than a goal against them every two games.
John Terry and Petr Cech were two of the key reasons why they were breached so few times, with them recognised since then as two of the best players in the league’s history.
Then there was of course the manager, Jose Mourinho, who was unsettling the big boys in English football with his charm and confidence.
He would go on to win a total of three league titles as manager of Chelsea, as well as a plethora of domestic trophies.
