Conor Gallagher has now developed into a “very important” player in the Chelsea squad.
That is according to ESPN pundit Mario Melchiot.
Chelsea came from behind to secure a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Monday night, with Conor Gallagher scoring two goals for the visitors at Selhurst Park.
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder is often praised for his incredible work rate and energy across the pitch. He’ll be partly judged on his goal contributions, though.
He’s now up to three goals and six assists so far this season across all competitions.
Melchiot, the former Chelsea defender, delivered a rave review of Gallagher straight after his latest display. He’s convinced that the Englishman is a real talisman at Stamford Bridge.
“I think he’s the one who kind of drives the team, when they need character, energy and motivation. He’s always showing it… This is a team that has to hold on to part of their culture, that’s why I think he’s very important,” Melchiot told ESPN.
Conor Gallagher very important for Chelsea
We firmly agree that Gallagher’s integral to a Chelsea group that is still so young and susceptible to inconsistency.

You can rely on the energetic midfielder to deliver a steady outing in most games he plays. If he’s not making the difference on the ball, you can guarantee he’ll cover every blade of grass when his team’s out of possession.
Therefore, constant transfer rumours about his possible exit should be alarming.
The Athletic recently claimed that £50m-rated Gallagher looks likely to leave Chelsea at the end of the season unless there’s a big turnaround.
Now, The Telegraph reported earlier today that Tottenham are planning to make a swoop to sign Gallagher this summer if he’s still not penned a contract extension at Stamford Bridge.
