The husband of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a wheelie bin has reportedly returned to India with their son and dumped the boy with his mother-in-law.

Chaithanya ‘Swetha’ Madhagani, 30, was found dead inside a green wheelie bin on Mount Pollock Road in Buckley, west of Geelong, southwest of Melbourne, at about 12pm on Saturday.

No arrests have been made in relation to her death while two crime scenes have been established by police – one on Mount Pollock Road and another 82km away at a residential address in Mirka Wat in Point Cook, Melbourne.

Ms Madhagani’s husband, Ashok Raj Varikuppala, is understood to have recently flown back to India with their three-year-old son Arya, The Herald Sun reported.

Indian police spokesman Inspector Veera Swamy at Kushaiguda police station said ‘her husband visited the mother-in-law a few days ago and handed him his son’.

‘After that he left. No one from the family has registered any complaint against anyone yet. We will help in investigations if someone approaches us.

‘As of now, we don’t know where he is as we are not investigating the case without any complaint.’

There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by Mr Varikuppala.

Victoria Police said in a statement on the mother’s death: ‘It is believed the parties involved are known to one another and the offender may have fled overseas’.

Friends have since described Ms Madhagani as ‘a perfect woman and a perfect mother’ who lived for her young son.

Ms Madhagani would often cook and share food and invited people into her home, friends said.

One neighbour told the publication that Ms Madhagani was ‘one of the sweetest girls ever’.

‘Everyone would want to have Swetha in their lives. She was full of life – I can’t believe she’s gone.

‘A life is lost, it’s worse she was found somewhere else we all deserve dignity.’

Another neighbour said he was in ‘disbelief’ at the news and that his son had attended a birthday party for the couple’s child.

He had known the family for three years,

‘They are a very good, nice family, I’ve never seen them argue,’ he said.

Another local recalled walking in the area on Friday, and noticed a pungent smell which he presumed was a dead sheep.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
