Pundit Jamie Carragher has now admitted that he was actually happy for one Chelsea player after last night’s win.

He told Sky Sports that he was delighted Mykhailo Mudryk had managed to find the net late in the game, with his strike turning out to be the winner against Newcastle United.

The Blues were 3-2 victors in an entertaining game at Stamford Bridge last night.

A cute finish from Nicolas Jackson early on gave them the lead, which was restored after the break by a Cole Palmer stunner from range.

It was the Ukraine international who had looked to put the game beyond doubt in the second half, when he showed his pace and dribbling abilities to break through, round the goalkeeper and convert.

It was another game where Mudryk had not been handed the start, the second in a row following his man of the match display against Leeds in the FA Cup.

He replaced Raheem Sterling, whose performance left very little to shout about as far as positives go.

Carragher has now admitted he was delighted for Mudryk to score the winner.

He said: “You know when you’re watching a game sometimes, and you have no skin in the game if you like, I was just pleased he scored. It’s been difficult for him, young player in London, it’s not been easy for him. It hasn’t gone as well as he would have liked.

“I was actually glad, if Chelsea were going to get that third goal that it was him. Nice for him, it’s been really tough for him.

“‘I saw him in the Champions League a couple years ago. There’s a player there. Sooner or later though you’ve got to show something, and hopefully this for him is the start of something.”

It should now be too difficult for manager Mauricio Pochettino to ignore the good performances from the 23-year-old, with there being five days until Chelsea return to action.

He should certainly be handed a start against Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.
