A husband and wife have been hospitalised after they were run over while trying to stop a group of thieves from driving off with their car south-east of Adelaide.

Police said four offenders broke into the backyard of a home on Darwin Road in Cooke Plains about 8pm yesterday.

The group was attempting to take off in a Toyota Hilux when the homeowners rushed outside and put themselves in front of the moving car.

The pair were mowed down and the group fled the scene in the stolen car.

The 59-year-old husband and his 49-year-old wife were rushed to the Murray Bridge Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries.

Their daughter, Dennis Blundell, told 9News her mother tried recording the incident on her phone but it was snatched off her by one of the offenders.

”Seems pretty typical these days doesn’t it. You’re not safe in your own house anymore,” she said.

“Maybe the penalties aren’t strong enough with these people causing problems breaking into cars and houses and everything else.”

Police are now on the hunt for a white 2019 Toyota Hilux, with the registration 2924 DAK, that was last seen travelling toward Tailem Bend on the Dukes Highway.

Anyone who sights the car or has information on this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
