The disappearance of 19-year-old Jay Slater in Tenerife has taken a surprising turn, with the revelation that one of the last people to see him was a convicted drug dealer named Ayub Qassim.
Qassim, 31, booked the Airbnb accommodation called Casa Abuela Tina where Jay stayed in the remote village of Masca. Qassim had invited Jay back to the £40-per-night rental after they met at a rave in the south of Tenerife on June 16th.
Qassim, who is also known by the nicknames “Whispers” and “Johnny Vegas”, has a criminal history that has now become intertwined with Jay’s disappearance. In 2015, he was jailed for 9 years as the ringleader of a London-based gang that imported and dealt heroin and crack cocaine in Cardiff.
One of Qassim’s former criminal associates, Rhoda Singh, has now spoken out about his involvement in the drug operation. She described him as a “quiet, polite and gentle fella” who “wouldn’t hurt a fly”. However, the fact that Qassim was keeping company with the missing teenager has raised eyebrows and sparked speculation about potential underworld connections to Jay’s case.
Spanish police initially interviewed Qassim and another friend he was traveling with, but determined them to be “irrelevant” to the investigation. Qassim has insisted that Jay left his Airbnb “alive” and that there were “no problems” between them.
Yet, the discovery of Qassim’s criminal past has added a new layer of intrigue to the mystery surrounding Jay’s disappearance. Authorities are now exploring whether the teenager’s association with this convicted drug dealer may hold clues to what ultimately happened to him in the remote mountains of Tenerife.
