Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is reportedly desperate to find out one thing during pre-season as soon as possible.

Enzo Maresca, 44, is currently overseeing the second week of the pre-season schedule for Chelsea’s players. They’ll soon jet out to the United States to begin friendly matches, starting with Wrexham next Thursday.

Maresca previously worked on the coaching staff at Manchester City, but let’s remember this is his first time as the senior manager at a Premier League club.

It’s been claimed by Mail Online, Chelsea’s squad are enjoying Maresca’s training, with the players only saying positive things so far. The Italian boss managed to strike up a great bond with Leicester City last season when he led them to the Championship title, so let’s hope he can build a similar relationship at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca wants to know the size of Chelsea’s squad ASAP

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed via his Substack on Thursday that Chelsea boss Maresca wants to know his final squad for this summer’s pre-season “as soon as physically possible”.

It is understood that he’s keen to find out if there will be any more incomings or outgoings. The reason is because he spends a lot of time individually with the players, so he could be wasting his time if some of them are soon destined to leave.

It’s certainly encouraging to hear Maresca builds connections with his players. It must be so frustrating for any manager during a transfer window knowing people may leave while you’re in the middle of preparing for a new season.

Why the Blues may need a deep squad

Chelsea have been guilty of struggling with an oversized squad in the last couple of years, but this 2024/25 campaign could be one where they need strength in depth.

They will be involved as usual in domestic competitions – the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. On top of that, Chelsea also have the UEFA Conference League, plus there’s the Club World Cup next summer.

There should be an opportunity for Maresca to shuffle his pack throughout the season and get plenty of minutes into the whole squad.
