Several names who used to manage Chelsea are now being linked with the England vacancy.

It comes after Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down as England boss, a development that has created an opportunity for a few men who have spent time in the Chelsea dugout.

The above includes Mauricio Pochettino. England will speak to Pochettino about the job following Southgate’s resignation.

However, it looks like the FA have already spoken to one former Chelsea manager, though it was not about coaching the senior team.

FA had recent talks with former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard has been out of work since his role as Chelsea caretaker manager ended last year.

Paul Merson’s backed Lampard for the England job, but it does not appear that the retired midfielder has discussed stepping into the Wembley dugout with the FA.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Lampard has actually spoken to the FA about becoming the manager of the Three Lions’ U21 team, with their current boss Lee Carsley a contender to replace Southgate.

On Substack, he wrote: “Sources also say that Carsley has a big chance of getting it. Incidentally, we also understand that Frank Lampard has had talks with the FA recently, but that was believed to be about taking the U21s manager position should it become available.”

Will Frank Lampard be the next England manager?

The FA have plenty of good options to choose from in their search for Southgate’s replacement. That includes another former Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel.

The England job appeals to Tuchel, and with coaches of the German and Pochettino’s calibre around, it would be a bit of a surprise if Lampard got the nod over them.

If the FA want another Englishman at the helm like Southgate and his predecessor Roy Hodgson, that obviously changes things. But if not, you would not expect Lampard to get the job over the likes of Tuchel and Pochettino.

They are more experienced managers with stronger CVs, with Tuchel, of course, taking over from Lampard at Chelsea back in 2021 before going on to win the Champions League. Lampard becoming the next England U21 boss, though, seems very possible.
