There’s a chance that one player in the Chelsea ranks could end up saving them millions further down the line.

It’s always wise not to get too carried away by pre-season, especially when it’s just the first game of a summer tour, but one Chelsea individual has just caught the eye in a very positive way.

Enzo Maresca watched his side draw 2-2 with Wrexham during his first match as the Blues head coach. Chelsea actually ended up using a total of 21 different players during the useful friendly match against Wrexham on Thursday.

Tyrique George, who’s an 18-year-old talent from the Blues youth system, played the first-half versus Wrexham. According to The Mirror in its print edition (21 July), George is tipped for a Chelsea first-team breakthrough.

Tyrique George can save Chelsea millions

We’ll wait to see more from George on this pre-season trip before jumping to wild conclusions, but his display this week should encourage everyone.

If the left-winger is good enough to earn a promotion from the academy to the senior squad, that may save the club millions. We’ve seen in the past just how expensive it is to sign attackers in the transfer market.

George played the first-half of Thursday’s game against Wrexham, and he used his 45 minutes wisely.

It was refreshing to see the young attacker named in Maresca’s first ever XI. He’s yet to make his competitive debut in senior football, but the hype around him is definitely building.

Speaking via Instagram back in February, Noni Madueke tipped George for a big future. It looks like he may be ready to make an impact pretty soon.

Meanwhile, former Under-21s Blues boss Mark Robinson described George as “very creative” last season via Chelsea’s official website.

How Tyrique George impressed against Wrexham

For anyone that missed George’s display in the United States, it was a really promising way to begin pre-season. Let’s hope that this summer is the springboard for him into the first team. If not, a sensible loan move could still be a decent pathway.

The teenager lined up in his preferred position on the left wing, where he’s been so effective in the academy.

He stood out against Wrexham because of his neat control and desire to dribble forward whenever he received the ball out on the touchline. It was enjoyable to watch his half as an out-and-out wide player that wants to run at his full-back and deliver crosses.

George’s deflected shot also led to his side’s opening goal from Christopher Nkunku. But of course, there’s still a long road for him to go in his development.
