Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has shared that some academy players may potentially be involved in the first-team squad against Newcastle United in a few days time.

Chelsea return to action on Monday night when they host Newcastle in the Premier League.

The Blues are yet again looking pretty thin on the ground due to the constant pile up of injuries.

Unfortunately, Ben Chilwell (injury), Levi Colwill (injury) and Conor Gallagher (illness) have been added to the club’s long injury list today via their official website.

So, what will the matchday squad look like on Monday when Chelsea host Newcastle at Stamford Bridge?

Mauricio Pochettino has shared that up to nine academy players trained with the senior group at Cobham this week. Some may get to be involved versus Newcastle, too…

“Yesterday there were nine young kids [training] from the academy. We know really well all the academy players,” Pochettino said during his press conference via YouTube.

“Yes, maybe they will have the possibility to be involved [against Newcastle], for sure. We have an amazing talent in the academy we need to use in this type of circumstance.”

Tyrique George and Kiano Dyer were among the Chelsea academy youngsters pictured mixing it with first-team stars during training yesterday, as displayed on the official club app.

Let’s see if either of the above are included on Monday at home to Newcastle.

We’re purely speculating at this point but perhaps 19-year-old Jimi Tauriainen may be involved again after he was handed a first-team debut in last weekend’s draw against Brentford.

It’s hugely irritating that Chelsea are without a big bunch of senior players for almost every game this year, but a positive spin on it is that it allows more talents from the youth ranks to get used to the senior dressing room.

There always needs to be a pathway available for the special academy players to jump across to the main group.
