Terrifying moment angry motorist threatens a speed camera operator with an axe – as a man is charged over the bizarre incident

A man has been arrested over a string of attacks on speed cameras and their operators, including one horrifying incident where an axe-brandishing masked figure stalks around an operator’s car throwing paint on it.

A 53-year-old man police allege was behind the incidents in Melbourne‘s inner west over the space of three months beginning in December last year, has since been charged.

In the most terrifying of these incidents video captures a masked figure stalking the camera operator’s car, menacingly carrying a small axe and throwing paint on the windscreen on January 25.

Approximately an hour earlier the operator’s car was approached by a cyclist, who police allege is the same attacker.

The cyclist allegedly abused the operator, spat on the vehicle’s window and punched the driver’s side mirror. 

The first incident occurred on December 4 when white paint was splashed on a traffic camera parked on Blackshaws Road in South Kingsville.

In a separate incident an inspector's car was approached by a cyclist who allegedly made threats while punching and spitting on the vehicle

Police arrested a man at a South Kingsville address after executing a search warrant on Thursday morning. 

He has been charged with criminal damage, abusing a road safety camera operator, threatening a road safety camera operator, threatening to inflict serious injury, possessing a dangerous article and other offences.

He appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
