Detective Sergeant Michael Doherty claimed to have nabbed the suspect at 11.12 a.m. and charged him with John Brogan’s murder at 11.43 a.m. at the Castlebar garda station.
The defendant did not react to the accusation after being warned.
Mr. McHale has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in Harristown District Court in Roscommon on Friday.
Gary Mulchrone, the accused’s defense attorney, did not seek bail but instead requested legal aid.
Mr. McHale’s statement of means, he claimed, had been provided to the court and showed his receipt of a social welfare allowance. The application was approved by Judge Fiona Lydon.

When emergency services were called around 6.30 p.m. on Sunday in response to reports of a fire in the hallway from onlookers, the dead man was found inside the property in Castlebar’s Pheasanthill neighborhood.
Gardai anticipated that CCTV footage from a nearby village would help them investigate Mr. Brogan’s death.
After the fire was extinguished, Mr. Brogan was found inside the building with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
Following a preliminary inspection of the body by pathologist Margot Bolster, Mr. Brogan’s remains were sent to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem.
Garda detectives are trying to determine if Mr. Brogan’s death was brought on by the fire or the apparent gunshot wounds.
It was later revealed that Mr. Brogan had been cleared of several prior sexual assault allegations against him last week and was facing new charges stemming from claims of historical abuse of a different individual.
On March 1, a judge in Mayo Circuit Court ordered Mr. Brogan’s release from 16 charges of sexual assault and found him not guilty of four additional crimes.
