Fernandez: I played for Pep Guardiola but gave up football – It’s not everyday a former footballer plays with Pep Guardiola then becomes a MasterChef champion, but Eneko Fernandez has done just that.
The 39-year-old has recently been crowned the winner of the eleventh edition of MasterChef in Spain.
Fernandez featured for several teams during his playing days, in particular Barcelona B, who were managed by Guardiola at the time.
He featured for the Catalan giants’ reserve side 19 times during the 2007-08 season, before then moving to hometown club Ejea.
The winger also had spells at Alaves, Sabadell, Oviedo, Tudelano and lately Zaragoza B.
His footballing career may never have really got going, but that certainly did not stop him taking up other challenges.
Swapping the pitch for the kitchen, winning MasterChef in Spain, he celebrated with his wife and children, before picking up the top prize from the judges.
“I am proud of myself, it is very strange for me to say these things to myself, but I really am,” Fernandez said.
“It has been the experience of my life.”
Not only did Fernandez win a trophy, he also scooped a staggering £85,000 in prize money for winning the competition.
The former footballer will also attend a cooking course at the Basque Culinary Centre in San Sebastien.
