He was transported to the nearby coastal town of Split on the mainland.

Dutch club Ajax, where he recently resigned as their director, confirmed the news on Twitter where they revealed he was in a stable condition.

His wife, Annemarie van der Sar, provided a new update on her husband’s health on Tuesday saying he’s communicative and stable but still remains in intensive care.

A statement read: Edwin is still in the intensive care unit, but is stable.

“He is not in life-threatening danger. Every time we get to visit him, he’s communicative. We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop.”

Van der Sar is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history having shone for both Ajax and Juventus.

He then made his presence known in England after joining Fulham in 2001, before moving on to Manchester United where he spent six years as the Red Devils’ number one.

United sent their support to the former goalkeeper in a club statement, which read: “Manchester United is holding Edwin van der Sar and his family in our collective thoughts after hearing the news that the legendary goalkeeper has fallen seriously ill.”

The club added: “Everyone at United wishes to join our friends at Ajax in wishing Edwin all the very best for a full and swift recovery.”
