Pokey had a passion for music from a young age, and he put in a lot of effort to climb up the ladder and become one of the most well-known rappers from Houston, Texas.
In the early 1990s, Pokey started his rap career alongside Houston artist DJ Screw. He made an appearance on DJ Screw’s influential mixtape called June 27 Freestyle.
He was recognized for his involvement in chopped and screwed music and was a member of the rap group Screwed Up Circle, which was based in Houston.
Pokey released his first official album titled “Hardest Pit in the Litter” on May 18, 1999. He also ventured into acting and appeared in the 2001 film “Soldiers United for Cash.” Later on, he took on the lead role in “Dirty Third 2: Home Sweet Home.”
Unfortunately, the rapper from Houston has passed away. Big Pokey died on Sunday, June 18, 2023, during a Juneteenth show at Pour 09 Bar in Beaumont, Texas. He was 45 years old.
After finishing his performance at the show, he suddenly collapsed while still holding the microphone. He was immediately rushed to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Bun B, another rapper, was the first to say that Pokey had died. He did this on Instagram on Sunday, June 18. In a letter, he said:
“I wasn’t ready for this. One of the most naturally talented artists in the city. Low key, humble mountain of a man who moved with honor and respect. He was easy to love and hard to hate. He’d pull up, do what he had to do and head home. One of the pillars of our city. If heart of gold was a person. Iconic member of the SUC. There will never be another and will be missed dearly. We love and honor you Sensei. Rest in heaven”
