Bill Hooser (age 50, December 1973 – May 5, 2024) was a dedicated law enforcement officer who served as a Sergeant at the Santaquin Police Department. He dedicated seven years of his life to serving the Santaquin City community through his role in law enforcement and also received the October 2022 Employee of the Month award.
Hooser’s journey in law enforcement started with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department in New Mexico, where he served diligently as a deputy sheriff for two years. In 2017, he seized the opportunity to join the Santaquin Police Department in Utah.
In pursuit of new opportunities, Bill transitioned to the Santaquin Police Department after completing the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) physical agility and written exams.
He embraced the challenge of working in a smaller agency, finding fulfillment in the close-knit community atmosphere compared to his previous role in a larger department in New Mexico.
Tragically, on Sunday, May 5, 2024, Sergeant Bill Hooser died while in the line of duty. During a routine patrol, a suspect fled in a semi-truck and executed an abrupt U-turn on the freeway, fatally striking Sgt. Hooser.
The impact of the collision claimed Hooser’s life instantaneously, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to his community.
Semi Truck Driver Arrested
Michael Aaron Jayne was the driver of the semi-truck that hit and killed Sergeant Bill Hooser. He ran away after the crash but was caught by the police later.
The crash happened before 8 a.m. on Interstate 15 near milepost 244 in Santaquin, UT. Because of the crash, both sides of the interstate were closed for some time.
Jayne was driving a white Ford F-150 with Utah license plate number 2D7TR. After he ran away, the police started looking for him. They told people to be careful because they thought Jayne might have a weapon and could be dangerous.
The police searched for Jayne for several hours before they found and arrested him.
Bill Hooser survived by his wife and daughters
