Jake Baker (age 22, January 11, 2002 – May 23, 2024) was a promising football player at Slippery Rock University, where he played as a defensive lineman for the team. He commenced his journey at Slippery Rock in the fall of 2023, transferring from Towson University.
Throughout his debut season, Baker showcased his talent in eight games as a defensive end, contributing significantly to The Rock’s success in clinching the 2023 PSAC West title and advancing to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals.
Before his time at Slippery Rock, Baker embarked on his college journey at Clarion in 2021, where he also achieved the status of a Dean’s List honoree.
However, tragedy struck on Thursday when Jake Baker passed away suddenly, prompting profound mourning from Slippery Rock University, its Athletics Department, and The Rock football team.
In a collective statement, the university, along with its athletic department and football team, expressed their grief over the loss of the talented student-athlete.

Jake Baker was born on January 11, 2002, in Thurmont Town, Maryland, and grew up alongside his sister Alyssa Baker. He attended Catoctin High School, where he achieved notable success both academically and athletically.
Baker excelled in football and wrestling, earning four letters in each sport. As a senior, he led Catoctin to a state championship, garnering all-state honors and selection to the Baltimore Touchdown Club All-Star Game.
Additionally, Jake was recognized as a two-time All-Frederick County selection and maintained a position on the honor roll throughout his high school years. He was also a member of esteemed organizations such as the National Arts Honor Society, the National Mathematics Honor Society, and the National Technical Honor Society.
After graduating from high school, Baker commenced his college journey in 2021 at Clarion University. During his time at Clarion, he appeared in 10 games, contributing 26 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, and one fumble recovery.
Following a transfer to Towson University in 2022, Jake redshirted for the season. Subsequently, he joined Slippery Rock University, where he played in eight games, totaling four tackles.
Notably, he achieved a season-high of two tackles against Mercyhurst and contributed with single-tackle performances against Clarion and Edinboro.
