Joshua Eyer (age 31,  July 1992 – April 29, 2024) was a police officer who dedicated six years of service to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) as a proud member of the North Tryon Division. Joining the force as part of the esteemed 178th Recruit Class, Officer Eyer displayed an unwavering commitment to his duty and community.

Tragically, on April 29, 2024, Officer Eyer succumbed to injuries sustained while bravely fulfilling his responsibilities. He was shot in the line of duty while assisting fellow officers in the apprehension of suspect Terry Clark Hughes.

CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings confirmed Officer Eyer’s passing, acknowledging the sacrifice he made in the line of duty. Alongside Officer Eyer, two officers from the U.S. Marshals task force, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, also lost their lives in the same incident. Another officer from the U.S. Marshals remains unnamed at this time.

Terry Clark Hughes was the first to fire at the officers

Terry Clark Hughes was wanted by the authorities for serious crimes, including unlawfully possessing a firearm and trying to escape from law enforcement multiple times, all in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

On April 29, 2024, in the North Tryon Division, specifically on Galway Drive, there was a confrontation involving Hughes and law enforcement officers. Hughes began shooting at the officers during this encounter.

In the gunfire, eight officers were hit and needed medical help urgently. Sadly, three of them, who were part of a task force, lost their lives because of their injuries.

Among the injured officers was Joshua Eyer, who had been serving as a police officer for six years. Despite the efforts to save him, Officer Eyer passed away after fighting for his life for several hours.

After the shootout, Hughes came out of the house on Galway Drive carrying a gun. Seeing him as an immediate danger, the officers fired their weapons, ultimately leading to Hughes being fatally wounded in the front yard of the house.

Once the situation was under control, Hughes was declared dead by the authorities at the scene.

Beyond his professional life, Officer Eyer was a beloved family man. He was the husband of Ashley Eyer and the proud father of three-year-old Andrew Eyer.

Additionally, he was connected to the community through his family ties, being the son-in-law of a chairperson at the Cabarrus Women’s Center, as noted by the StoneBridge Community Church.

The loss of Officer Eyer is deeply felt by his loved ones, colleagues, and the community at large. As we mourn his passing, our thoughts and prayers are with his grieving family, especially his wife and young son. May they find comfort and strength during this difficult time.
