Almost two million Australians aged over 15 experienced card fraud in 2022-23, with one in six victims losing more than $1000.

“The Personal Fraud Survey found that 8.7 per cent of people experienced card fraud in 2022 to 2023,” ABS head of crime and justice statistics William Milne said.

“This was an increase from 8.1 per cent in 2021 to 2022.”

Card fraud involves the unauthorised use of credit, debit or eftpos card details to make purchases or withdraw funds from the owner’s account.

Nearly all victims of card fraud notified authorities upon becoming aware, while 92 per cent of people were contacted by a bank or financial institution to report the incident.

The survey also found nearly 200,000 Australians were victims of buying or selling scams involving online shopping or false billing.

Nearly 50 per cent of banks or financial institutions notified victims of scams reporting the incident.

Victims should be aware of requests to make payments of fake invoices or purchases of non-existent goods, which are classified as online shopping scams.
