David Fincher confirms that Mindhunter will not have a third season: ‘In the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience’

Mindhunter executive producer David Fincher said the show will not return for a third season on Netflix.

The filmmaker, 60, spoke with the French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche about the fate of the Emmy-nominated crime drama that ran from 2017 thru 2019, saying that the streaming service found the show too pricey to proceed with.

‘I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment’ for a third season, Fincher told the outlet in the interview, which is translated from French.

He added: ‘I don’t blame them; they took risks to get the show off the ground … it’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness.

‘The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.’

Members of the cast including Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv were let go from their contracts following the August 2019 release of the show’s second season, TV Line reported.

In January of 2020, just prior to the beginning of the coronavirus, a Netflix rep told the outlet that Fincher ‘may revisit Mindhunter again in the future,’ but was busy with other projects at the time.

The rep added that Fincher, the director of classics such as Seven, Fight Club and The Social Network, ‘felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.’

In October of 2020, Fincher told Vulture that the show was probably not going to return to the air, considering the costs involved.

‘For the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show,’ Fincher said. ‘We talked about, “Finish [the 2020 film] Mank and then see how you feel,” but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did Season 2.

‘And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.’

Fincher has past worked with the streaming service on projects including the series House of Cards, the film Mank and the upcoming action thriller The Killer, which features Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton.

The motion picture is due to hit the streaming service November 10, 2023.
