An immigration detainee has been charged after allegedly failing to meet his visa-mandated curfew.

The Australian Federal Police arrested a 42-year-old man yesterday after he was found in Perth.

He was charged with five counts of failing to comply with a curfew condition and one count of failing to keep a monitoring device in working order.

Police said the man, from the East African country of Burundi, allegedly breached conditions of his visa between Friday last week and yesterday.

He was expected to face Midland Magistrates Court today for the offences, which carry a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and a $93,900 fine.

Dozens of detainees held by the Australian government were released last year after the High Court ruled indefinite detention was illegal.

The government, which opposed the ruling in court, was forced to pass through curfew and monitoring laws in response.

Just last week, another detainee was charged in Perth over the alleged violent bashing of a grandmother and theft of $200,000 of jewellery from her home.
