Police are searching for a driver behind an alleged hit and run that left a cyclist hospitalised with serious injuries south-east of Melbourne.

The cyclist was travelling on Centre Dandenong Road when he was hit by a car at the intersection of Brownfield Street in Cheltenham about 5.50am today, police said.

The motorist allegedly failed to stop and help the man.

The cyclist, a 53-year-old man from Dingley, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police believe the car involved was a Nissan Navara Utility and have released an image of its likeness to appeal for information.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, has CCTV or dashcam footage, or any other information about the incident has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
