Pictured: Husband and wife happily enjoying Christmas dinner together… three days later she was arrested and charged with his murder

  • On December 28, Paul Hanson, 54, was found dying from a stab wound by police
  • Teresa Hanson, 54, was charged with the murder of her husband last week
  • The Yorkshire-based couple had two children and had been married for 34 years

Sitting at the Christmas dinner table with other members of their family, Teresa and Paul Hanson looked the picture of happiness.

But three days after what their daughter described as the ‘the best day’, Mr Hanson, 54, was found dying from a stab wound by police. His wife was later charged with his murder.

Teresa Hanson marked her 54th birthday behind bars yesterday after being remanded in custody. The grandmother appeared at Hull Magistrates’ Court on Saturday charged with murdering her husband at their home in West Cowick, a village near Snaith, East Yorkshire.

She spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth – January 1, 1969. Wearing a grey tracksuit she addressed the court in a near whisper as family members sobbed from the public gallery.

Describing the case as a ‘difficult situation for all concerned’, magistrates said it had to be sent to the crown court. Hanson is due to appear at Hull Crown Court tomorrow.

When the couple’s daughter Sherri Hanson posted happy Christmas Day photos on Facebook there was no hint of the tragedy to follow three days later.

The photos included Hanson and her husband wearing festive hats and sitting around the dinner table with other relatives. Sherri commented that they ‘had the best day today with family’.

Her mother responded: ‘Was a fantastic day. Goes too quick x.’ Sherri then replied: ‘We had the best day! Thank you for the best Christmas dinner!’

But the happy family scene was forgotten when police were called to the house at 7.15pm on December 28. Humberside Police said they received ‘reports that a man had sustained a stab wound’.

Mr Hanson was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards despite attempts by the emergency services to save him.

The couple had two children and had been married for 34 years.

Mr Hanson is believed to have worked in construction while his wife was a hairdresser who ran a business from home selling luxury homeware items.

The tragedy has shocked the rural community. One villager said: ‘The husband seemed like a very nice guy. He would always say hello to you.

‘I would pass him in the road sometimes and see him going to work in his van. I think they have lived here quite a few years.

‘I could not believe it when police knocked on the door and said they were making inquiries – you do not expect this at any time of year around here, let alone Christmas and they had just had all the family around.’
