A major police pursuit across Melbourne involving more than a dozen police cars has ended with officers swarming on three teenagers in a shopping centre car park.
The teenagers - a 16-year-old boy and two 15-year-old girls – allegedly carried out two home invasions and an attempted carjacking while armed with machetes, before they drove away at speeds up to 200km/h, police have revealed.
9News understands up to 20 marked and unmarked police cars and a police helicopter pursed a black Nissan Pathfinder as it sped from Melbourne’s west towards Geelong just after 9am.
Motorist Dan called Nine radio station 3AW to report seeing the chase, saying he believed the cars were travelling at more than 150km/h.
”All of them were doing over 150km/h – absolutely flying,” he told Tony Jones.
Police have said the chase got up to 200km/h as it travelled through Wyndham Vale and Werribee.
The car was then spotted heading in the opposite direction, towards Melbourne Airport, before the chase came to an end in a shopping centre car park on Horne Road in Sunbury, in Melbourne’s north-west about 9.45am.
Witness Louisa told Tony Jones she saw the arrests outside the entrance to Big W at the shopping centre.
“There’s about 20 police and more coming,” she said.
“The other guy on the ground is quite vocal.
“He’s having a nice chat to the coppers, using some nice language.”
Critical Incident Response police were involved in the arrests.
A 16-year-old Wyndham Vale boy, a 15-year-old Ivanhoe girl and a 15-year-old Windsor girl have been taken into custody.
