A man accused of attempting to murder a police officer during a traffic stop in South Australia is refusing to appear in court or cooperate.

Police attempted to stop a silver Holden SUV on the Barrier Highway in Ucolta on Friday afternoon when it allegedly drove into an officer and fled the scene.

Sergeant Mark Woods suffered broken ribs and was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he remained tonight in a stable condition.

The SUV was found nearby and 43-year-old Victorian man Matthew Dullard was charged with attempted murder, acts to endanger life, dangerous driving to escape police pursuit, leave the scene of an accident and other traffic offences.

He was scheduled to appear at Port Pirie Magistrates Court via video link today but refused to leave his cell.

He has also refused to speak to police and a lawyer, who offered to provide him advice over the phone.

Dullard, whose family were in court, has schizophrenia and has not been taking his medication since a day before the incident, the magistrate was told.

He will remain in custody before he is brought to Adelaide to be assessed by a psychologist.

He is due to face court again in July but can apply for bail before then if he chooses to.
