A man and a woman have been arrested after a dramatic police pursuit through Melbourne

Police allege the pair stole a delivery van from an address on Tallis Circuit in Truganina about 2.30pm today.

Air Wing was dispatched and allegedly observed the van driving through Mt Derrimut Road crossing onto the wrong side of the street and running red lights.

Officers successfully deployed stop sticks before the driver allegedly attempted to drive the van on its rims.

Once coming to a stop on Leakes Road, the pair dumped the vehicle and fled on foot.

They were arrested a short time later.

Travis Miatke told 9News he was on his way to pick up his daughters on Fitzgerald Road around 2:35 pm when saw the van driving on the wrong side of the road.

“There was probably about six police cars just 20 to 50 metres back,” he said.

“When I saw the front wheel blown out and all the sort of rubber on the road behind him and then saw the police cars, I thought, ‘Yeah, someone’s stolen it or he’s trying to get away from something’.

“Luckily, I caught sight of him coming my way pretty quickly. If I wasn’t paying as much attention who knows what could’ve happened.”

The man and woman, who are both from Queensland, are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
