A 74-year-old man is fighting for life after an early-morning home invasion in an affluent bayside suburb of Melbourne.

Up to three people broke into the home on Anita Street in Beaumaris just before 1.30am yesterday morning, police have been told.

The man and a 75-year-old woman were home at the time.

The woman was not injured but the man was “significantly assaulted”, according to police, and received serious head and facial injuries.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

At this stage, it doesn’t appear that anything was stolen from the home.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
