A man and a woman have died after he jumped on to the railway tracks to save her from being hit by a freight train.

Aroulen Chinnien, 25, was reportedly having an argument with a woman in her 30s on Berowra Railway Station, in the city’s north, at midnight on Friday.

He reportedly threw one of her belongings, believe to be a phone, onto the tracks and she went to get it.

Mr Chinnien then saw the oncoming train and jumped down to save her, but they were both hit.

Emergency services were called they died on the scene. 

On Friday afternoon, three people who knew both victims paid tribute by pouring beer on the tracks.

One friend, Josh, said the situation was so tragic he was unable to go to work on Friday.

‘Go hug your family and hug your friends because you don’t know how long they’re going to be there for,’ he told Sky News.

‘They were good people, good beautiful people, they’ve never done anything wrong to anyone.’

Neighbours told Daily Mail Australia his family is in a state of shock. 

‘We’re not really 100 per cent sure what happened’ one neighbour said. 

Mr Chinnien lived near the train station with his parents. 

Officers from Kuring Gai Police Area Command established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
