State and federal leaders will meet today as the national cabinet looks to address the escalating crisis of violence against women around the country.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will meet with state premiers and territory chief ministers to discuss how to reduce gender-based violence.
High on the agenda will be a law that came into force in South Australia overnight.
The new law requires violent offenders to be tracked with electronic devices that would inform police as to their location.
It’s designed to protect women from potential attacks by previous offenders.
Other possibilities such as stricter bail laws, addressing harmful online content, and more funding for women’s and children’s support services, are also expected to be on the table.
The meeting follows mass protests around the country on the weekend which saw tens of thousands of people rally to call for an end to violence against women.
”We need to acknowledge that this is an issue which is long term, does require attitudinal change, requires a whole range of measures,” Albanese said.
“But we also need practical, immediate measures and responses as well.”
