Netflix viewers have been left outraged after popular crime series Young Wallander was cancelled by the streaming service after two seasons.

It is the latest in a long list of cancellations, which has seen shows such as 1899, Uncoupled and Ridley Jones all axed.

The series, which debuted in 2020, was based on the origin story of Henning Manskell’s inspector Kurt Wallander, played by Adam Palsson.

Although it was released to rave reviews, the show has not been renewed for a third season, according to What’s on Netflix.

Fans took to Twitter to express their dismay at the news, with one saying: ‘What I really liked the series. Really Netflix…’

Another user commented: ‘Nooooooo’, while another showed their disappointment by saying ‘Boo!’

Others however thought the programme had already rounded off nicely, while some thought the second season, released in 2022, didn’t match up to the first.

One person said: ‘#YoungWallander cancelled by Netflix. What’s a shame is that it was a series with good ideas… but which was absolutely pointless as a prequel to #Wallander.’

Shamil added: ‘Aww I liked this show… but it ended well in Season 2.’

The official description of the series read: ‘Young Wallander is a young, edgy, and modern series that sees Henning Mankell’s iconic detective Kurt Wallander investigate his gripping first case.

‘The story focuses on the formative experiences – professional and personal – faced by Kurt as a recently graduated police officer in his early twenties.’

After witnessing the bizarre and brutal murder of a teenage football player in his hometown of Malmo, the rookie police (Adam Pålsson) officer was tapped to help investigate.

The drama saw the police officer investigate the local refugee community, leading to vicious racist backlash and anti-immigration marches into the city, before discovering that one of Sweden’s richest families could be involved in the attack.

Young Wallander was produced by Yellow Bird UK, a branch of the Swedish film and television production company which produced the original series starring Kenneth Branagh.

It comes after Netflix cancelled Neil Patrick Harris’s romcom series Uncoupled in January, after it aired for just one season in 2022.

The show’s premise was based around a gay man re-entering singledom in New York City after he was abruptly dumped by his partner of 17 years.

MailOnline has contacted Netflix for comment.
