Golyar met Kroupa in 2012 through a dating app, and according to the latter the pair discussed how their relationship was only intended to be casual.

They were involved on and off for several months before Kroupa met Cari Farver at his auto repair shop in Macedonia, Iowa, and asked her out.

Faver dated Kouper for just two weeks before seemingly breaking up with him over text.

However, it seems that text was sent by Golyar, who met Farver in the hallway of her boyfriend’s apartment building.

It was eventually determined that Golyar stabbed Farver to death before her disappearance, and digital forensics administrator Anthony Kava estimated that Golyar must have spent about 40 to 50 hours a week impersonating Farver.

No one saw Cari again after November 13, 2012, but Kroupa continued to receive texts from her years later, ranging from stalking to threats, and Golyar was also keeping her victim’s email and Facebook profiles active.

At the time, Golyar was also claiming to be receiving threatening texts and even burned down her own house, with pets inside, to further her deception.

Despite Farver missing a number of family events, including her son’s 15th birthday, Thanksgiving, and her father’s funeral, it took years for Golyar to be caught – to the frustration of Father’s mother, Nancy Raney, who also features in the film.

In 2015, the case was taken up by Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office investigator Ryan Avis and Sergeant Jim Doty.

They finally found that Golyar had not only murdered Farver but also kept her phone to impersonate her online.

In doing so, she made an error that was key in helping the police track Golyar down, as she took a photo of what appeared to be a tied up, decomposing body on her tablet.

Another photo, which helped to removed any further doubt, showed a foot with a tattoo of a Chinese symbol that matched the one Farver had on her body.

On December 22, 2016, Golyar was charged with the first-degree murder of Cari Farver and was found guilty of the crime on August 15 2017.

She is currently serving a life sentence at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women.
