NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb has sacked the head of police media amid scrutiny over her public handling of an officer’s alleged double murder.

Liz Deegan was told her services were no longer required less than a year after she was hired as the executive director of public affairs, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

She has now served her last day.

A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed her departure, saying the force would like to “wish her all the best in her future endeavours and thank her for her contribution”.

Deegan’s role handled media and issues management, internal communication, proactive communications, overseeing the corporate image and operational support to investigations.

She has previously held senior and chief media positions at NRL and News Corp.

Her sacking comes amid public scrutiny over Webb’s media response to senior constable Beau Lamarre-Condon being charged over the deaths of Sydney couple Luke Davies and Jesse Baird.

She was criticised for not fronting the media earlier than she did.

Webb then went on a slew of media interviews and gained further backlash when she quoted Taylor Swift and said “haters like to hate”.
