Octavia Spencer announces her Apple TV+ series Truth Be Told has been cancelled after three seasons: ‘Poppy Scoville signing off’

After three seasons, Octavia Spencer’s Apple TV+ series Truth Be Told has been cancelled.

Octavia, 52, who stars as true crime podcaster Poppy Scoville, announced the show had been cut on her Instagram account on Monday.

She posted a video montage of the crew working behind-the-scenes as she broke the news to legions of dedicated Truth Be Told fans.

‘Hey y’all. I wanted to share the news that after three seasons of seeking truth and justice, Poppy Scoville is going on a much-needed vacation,’ Octavia began in the caption.

‘I want to thank my partners at #OritEntertainment, @HelloSunshine, Chernin Entertainment, @FifthSeason, and everyone at @Apple @AppleTV for being so supportive over the past three seasons.

The video showed the massive army working behind-the-scenes of the show, along with Gabrielle Union, who appeared on season three, posing with Octavia.

Devastated fans took to the comments section to commiserate over the cancellation, while Reese Witherspoon and Kate Hudson sent supportive messages to Octavia.

‘You are truly the most wonderful and inspiring actress / producer / human being! I (heart emoji) you,’ Reese, who executive produces the show, commented.

‘What a joy to work with you on this series! Love you,’ Kate, who appeared on season two of the show, posted.

One ‘heartbroken’ fan commented: ‘Me and the family were just discussing how we have to REWORK our Friday nights until next season. WHAT A GREAT SHOW! I AM BEYOND PISSED! One of the best shows I have watched in AGES!!! DAMN!!!

Apple’s head of programming Matt Cherniss raved about Octavia as he addressed the cancellation. 

‘This show has given us the opportunity to not only witness Octavia’s mesmerizing and nuanced portrayal of crime-solving podcaster Poppy Scoville, but to explore so many powerful and timely themes set against the backdrop of a captivating family drama. We can’t wait to find our next project together,’ he said, according to TV Line. 

The series, which is based on Kathleen Barber’s novel While You Were Sleeping, debuted in 2019 and boasted a cast including Aaron Paul and Lizzy Caplan.

Octavia, who won an Academy Award in 2012, also served as an executive producer from 2019 to 2021.
