A father who allegedly had a fake gun pointed at him in an attempted carjacking managed to speed away after the accused robber bungled the ambush.
The Perth man had just pulled into the carpark of a bike store in the suburb of Success when he was allegedly approached by a man wearing black with his face covered.
The accused armed robber allegedly ran towards the dad’s white Tesla, approached the driver’s window and shouted at him to get out of the vehicle.
The father quickly put his car in reverse as the armed robber fumbled to get what appeared to be a handgun out of his bag.
The weapon was allegedly pointed at the driver and used to hit the window as the 39-year-old took off.
He alerted other motorists to the man as he sped away by yelling “he’s got a gun”.
The would-be carjacker allegedly chased with weapon in hand and ran past bystanding shoppers.
Police who were nearby at another callout quickly swooped on the scene and pinned the 28-year-old man to a footpath along Beeliar Drive.
It was only then that the weapon was found to be a fake.Â
Police allege moments before his bungled ambush on the driver, the man attempted to hold up a 7-Eleven service station but a worker refused to give over cash.
Premier Roger Cook said the alleged spree is why his weapons crackdown is needed.Â
“They’re the first lot of significant reforms since the Port Arthur massacre so they are well and truly overdue,” Cook said.
