Police have released images of a man they believe can assist their investigation into an alleged bomb hoax on Sydney’s light rail in the middle of the CBD.

NSW police said the alleged hoax happened around 5.10 pm on Saturday, May 11th, and asked any members of the public who recognise the man to come forward.

The alleged bomb hoax took place on the light rail somewhere between Circular Quay and Chinatown, police said.

The man was described as caucasian, approximately 170cm tall with a short unshaven beard.

He was wearing a grey baseball cap with sunglasses and a dark hoodie.

Police said the man was carrying a dark green backpack with a brown rectangular label on the front at the time of the incident.

The man boarded the tram at Circular Quay around 5.16 pm, and got off the tram at 5.30 pm at the Chinatown light rail stop, police said.

The man was last seen at the intersection of George Street and Campbell Street heading east.

Police asked anyone with knowledge of the identity of the man in the images they shared to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers.
