The fatal encounter began on Monday afternoon when Tara Police Station constables Rachel McCrow, 29, and Matthew Arnold, 26, attended the property at Wains Road, Wieambilla.

They were accompanied by Chinchilla officers Constable Keeley Brough and Constable Randall Kirk, both 28.

They were there to check for the presence of Nathaniel Train, who had been reported missing after abruptly leaving his job as a teacher and his wife and home in New South Wales.

When the people inside the property refused to come out the front of the 43ha property to allow the officers to check for the presence of Nathaniel Train, officers McCrow and Arnold jumped the fence.

They were fired upon from within the house; McCrow was struck in the leg and Arnold was also hit.

Kirk, who was still behind the perimeter fence, received a grazing bullet wound to a leg but managed to take off in his police car to call for help.

One of the Train brothers then emerged from the wooden house and moved down the driveway, shooting the stricken McCrow and Arnold at point blank range with a shotgun.

The shooter then took the Glock handguns from the bodies of the two officers and went back inside the house.

Brough managed to escape and hide in the surrounding scrub, but the Trains set fire to the grass trying to flush her out as she desperately retreated towards Robbos Road at the back of the Trains’ property.

Brough called 000 and texted her family, but managed to escape and was rescued by police reinforcements who had arrived at the scene.

When a large team of officers from Queensland’s Special Emergency Response Team had gathered to get the assailants, police say ‘a substantial gun battle’ ensued.

Nathaniel, Gareth and Stacey Train were by then armed with the shotgun, two other firearms and the two Glocks stolen from bodies of McCrow and Arnold.

The Trains fired on the SERT vehicle, which ended up pierced with bullet-holes which could not penetrate the armour.

Stacey Train ‘engaged’ with police during the firefight, but it is unsure whether she was wearing camouflage clothing like her husband and brother-in-law.

During the firefight, which left hundreds of shell casings on the property’s driveway and the front of the house, a vehicle was set on fire.

On police bodycam video of the shoot-out, officers can be heard identifying the Train males as PO1 and PO2 being under the car or near the house as the exchange of gunfire continued.

Neighbour Alan Dare, alarmed by the sound of gunfire and the sound of the vehicle exploding, drove to the front of the Trains’ house and as he was getting out of his car, he was shot in the back.

Mr Dare fell to the driveway and died from his wounds as the gun battle continued.

Distraught police officers believe the Trains ambushed police deliberately, even thought they were not adequately armed for the fight, forcing them to steal the slain officers’ weapons.

The three also had ‘no escape plan’, leading police to believe they may have intended to die during the shoot-out.
