Sunrise host Natalie Barr breaks down in tears over breakthrough law following heartbreaking fatal teen stabbing in Queensland

Sunrise host Natalie Barr struggled to hold back tears as she interviewed the parents of a Gold Coast teenager who was stabbed to death by a gang of youths three years ago.

Jack Beasely, 17, was killed during a fight with two other teens outside a convenience store in Surfers Paradise.

Since Jack’s death, his father Brett and mother Belinda have fought tirelessly for new laws targeting knife crime to be passed.

‘Jack’s Law’ will finally be tabled in Queensland Parliament, before officially being ‘signed off’ on Sunday – which would have been Jack’s 21st birthday.

Jack’s parents said they were proud the new laws were being put into place on what would have been their late son’s milestone day.

‘To have it signed off on that day is going to be very special,’ Brett told Natalie and her co-host David Koch.

Natalie struggled to hold back tears as David applauded and congratulated the Queensland parents for their ‘brilliant’ achievement.

David went to subtly comfort his co-host before she became emotional.

‘The face that they have to do it,’ she said through tears.

‘I’m so sorry for them.’

Natalie has two sons of her own – Lachlan, 21, and teen son Hunter Thompson, 17.

The 17-year-old was on his way to the heart of the Gold Coast with his friends for a night out.

Mrs Beasley told the court in 2020 that her family had endured a ‘living nightmare’ ever since.

She said the sight of Jack’s lifeless body at the hospital will ‘haunt us for the rest of our lives’ and the sound of an ambulance siren sparked flashbacks of the night she lost her ‘beautiful boy’.

‘We will never be the same. You didn’t just kill Jack that day, you killed our entire family – the pain never goes away.’

The boy who stabbed Jack tendered a written apology that was read in court before briefly standing up to say he was ‘very, very sorry’.

‘There are no words … that are going to take away any pain that I have caused,’ the letter read.

‘I understand that I may never be forgiven but I hope one day I will.’

The younger boy admitted to not only stabbing Jack, but also another 17-year-old boy twice during the fight, pleading guilty to murder and two counts of committing malicious acts with intent.

He must serve 70 per cent of the 10-year sentence.

The other teen pleaded guilty to manslaughter and two counts of grievous bodily harm – He must serve 50 per cent of his seven-year term.

Since the tragedy, Jack’s family has established a non-profit foundation to curb youth violence.

‘Absolutely gutted. How can you put a value of 10 years as a life sentence for taking someone’s life,’ the foundation posted on social media.
