A 16-year-old boy has been charged after he allegedly crashed a stolen car into two cars, including one that had an off-duty detective sitting in it at the time, in Melbourne overnight.

Authorities were first alerted to the teenager allegedly driving “erratically” in the stolen car in Carrum about 6.40pm yesterday.

The driver was travelling north on the Nepean Highway in Chelsea when he veered onto the wrong side of the road and ran a red light before crashing into two other vehicles, police allege.

Police said the teenager tried to run from the scene when he was chased by an off-duty female detective senior constable, who was in one of the cars hit by the vehicle.

The 16-year-old boy was quickly arrested and was taken to hospital under police guard.

He has since been charged with three counts of aggravated burglary, theft of motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and other driving-related offences.

The boy has been remanded to appear at the children’s court at a later date.
