Police are asking for public assistance after a woman was assaulted in Coffs Harbour yesterday.

The 45-year-old woman was struck from behind and assaulted while she was walking on the Coffs Creek Walkway at 6am on Wednesday.

The impact knocked her unconscious, police say.

Two members of the public stopped to assist the woman at 10.23am, before calling an ambulance.

She was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area between 5.30am and 10.30am has been urged to contact the police.
