Mystery deepens as cops reveal ‘tightly wrapped’ body of a woman found in apartment garage had been there ‘since 2009’

  • Police said dead woman found last month had been there at least seven years
  • Maintenance worker found the remains under a unit complex near Brisbane
  • Police are appealing for information about her identity as how she died unclear

Police say the body of a woman found ‘tightly wrapped’ by cleaners in an apartment building garage was buried underneath clothes and rubbish for at least seven years.

Detectives are appealing for information about the remains which were found at an Alderley Road unit complex, north of Brisbane on December 7, 2022.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham, Regional Crime Coordinator for Brisbane said the woman’s identity and how she died was still under investigation.

‘This is an extremely complex investigation – to try and trace the movements of an as yet unidentified woman from at least seven years ago, is extraordinarily challenging,’ Det Supt Massingham said.

‘We also have to try and identify this woman from skeletal remains, which requires forensic expertise and knowledge from different scientific fields, which is clearly a very detailed and protracted process.

‘Investigations have revealed the woman has been deceased for at least seven years and her body is believed to have been at the unit block where she was located in early December, for that period of time.’

Superintendent Massingham previously said the body was covered in clothing and bedding and police believe this concealed the smell of decomposing remains.

Police are treating the woman’s death as suspicious, as signs of trauma have been found on the body.

It is believed the woman was aged between 30 and 55 years old and died sometime between 2009 and 2015.

Forensic examinations determined the woman is approximately 155 to 165cm tall, wore size 10 clothing and had dark brown hair.

It has also been determined she wore prescription glasses.

Detective Superintendent Massingham said they are reviewing missing persons reports both in Queensland and Australia-wide.

‘At this stage, this is a complete mystery,’ he said.

‘The important part of this puzzle … to give the investigation the lifeblood it needs, is the identification of this person.

‘We strongly urge people to come forward with any information they think might be relevant.

‘We are committed to finding out who this woman is. Who she is, why she died and who is responsible. She deserves nothing less and neither does her family.’

Police know the unit complex was built in 2006. Detectives have spoken to its current tenants and owners and are also tracking those who have since moved on.

Investigations continue.
