Woman, 23, with a suspended license is charged after chain-reaction crash involving an MTA bus and SIX cars leaves 14 people injured, one critically

A 23-year-old woman with a suspended license has been charged after sparking a chain-reaction crash that involved an MTA bus and six cars, leaving 14 people injured and one critically.

Chandiana Jean was behind the wheel of a 2003 Chevy Impala, going north on Essex Street near New Lots Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn on Sunday night around 8:30pm, when she first rear-ended a 2021 Toyota Sienna driven by a 22-year-old man, as per The New York Post

The Toyota Sienna was pushed into the busy roadway crashing into a 2006 Ford Escape SUV. The SUV driven by a 55-year-old male was at a stop sign headed westbound on New Lots Avenue when it was struck, according to police. 

Authorities said Jean’s car struck the B15 MTA bus. The 44-year-old passenger inside the car sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Brookdale University Medical Center. There was also a 26-year-old passenger that had sustained minor injuries and taken to the same hospital.

Jean was transported to Jamaica Hospital with minor injuries and than charged with aggravated unlicensed operator and possession of a forged instrument due to an unregistered vehicle, an NYPD spokesperson told DailyMail.com

An NYPD spokesperson said that someone called 911 to alert the authorities to the crash.

Police said that eight people on the bus were hospitalized including the male driver, 38, who suffered an injured rib. 

Seven bus passengers sustained minor injuries include four men, between the ages of 30 and 60 and three woman between the age of 20 to 55 years-old. 

The injured were transported to various different hospitals in the area.

The 22-year-old driver in the Toyota Sienna sustained some back and neck injuries and was treated at Brookdale Hospital. 

Also, in that vehicle was a 43-year-old man and 18-year-old woman. Both were taken to the hospital, and sustained minor injuries. 

The 55-year-old Ford Escape driver went to the Kings County Hospital Center with minor injuries, police said.

Is it unclear where Jean was traveling and what prompted her to drive with a suspended license.

Accordingn to the authorities, she lived a half-a-mile away from the crash site.
