An Australian tourist has been found dead in Kazakhstan after disappearing for three days.

Jake Michael Herd, 27, was found dead near Big Almaty Lake, in the Tian Shan mountains, at an altitude of around 2500 metres, according to local authorities. 

Herd had been missing for three days after disappearing on Sunday.

He was last seen leaving his hostel to hike around the mountainous region. 

Rescuers said they found his body along with all his personal belongings – indicating he did not die violently.

Mr Herd is believed to have fallen down before he died. 

He is understood to have arrived at Kazakhstan last weekend and had been planning to leave on Monday.
