Chaos on BBC Breakfast as pregnant broadcaster Nina Warhurst is heckled by protester shouting about ‘anti-British’ corporation and ‘slashing the licence fee’ live on air

  • The BBC presenter had been reporting on inflation outside in Salford Quays

BBC presenter Nina Warhurst was confronted live on air this morning by a heckling protester who branded the public broadcaster as ‘anti-British’ before calling for the licence fee to be slashed.

The BBC Breakfast business correspondent, who is pregnant, was approached by the shouting man as she reported live about inflation from Salford Quays.

As she spoke to Sally Nugent and Jon Kay in the studio, a man could be heard shouting in the background before coming into view behind the presenter.

The heckler, who walked past an ice-cream van wearing a beanie, chanted: ‘Anti-British BBC. Slash the TV licence fee. Why don’t the anti-British BBC ever do anything… for the people of this country?’

As the angry protester continued to make a ruckus during the broadcast, Nina stayed calm and collected as she walked away from him, telling viewers ‘excuse us for one second’.

Nina had been in the middle of a broadcast about inflation rates and how it is affecting sales from ice cream vans.

She said before the man came into view: ‘I’m treating myself to an ice cream cone shortly, but Claire’s prices have gone up to £3.50 for a single cone and it’s not surprising really when you look at the overall inflation of food and ingredients.

‘Overall food inflation, at the moment, is 17.3 per cent.’

Following the commotion, back in the studio Jon joked ‘Clearly there is a lot of demand for ice cream’ while Sally added ‘Do you know what? Don’t mess with our Nina’.

The BBC breakfast presenters then reassured viewers, with Sally telling the audience ‘Nina is not alone, she has people with her.’
