  • Group of tradies performed a citizen’s arrest
  • An alleged car thief was pinned to the road
  • Police then put the man, 25, in handcuffs

A group of fast-thinking tradies have been hailed as ‘legends’ after they performed a dramatic citizen’s arrest on an alleged car thief.

The men in hi-vis restrained the man, 25, after he crashed into a power pole on Surf Parade in Broadbeach, Queensland just before 11am on Friday.

The man, who was driving an allegedly stolen Ford Mondeo, came within metres of hitting the tradies as they took a break outside the worksite.

The alleged thief tried to flee the scene on foot, but not before a small army of tradies sprinted after him and pinned him to the ground.

Footage captured by onlookers shows at least three tradies restraining the man in the middle of the road before police arrived and put him in handcuffs.

Queensland Police said in a statement: ‘It will be alleged that the 25-year-old male driver attempted to flee on foot but was restrained by onlookers.

‘Police arrived and took the man into custody.

‘No one was injured during the incident.’

Broadbeach resident Bobby-Jo Campbell was nearby in his apartment at the time when he heard a loud crash outside.

‘I was just about to make a coffee and heard a crash outside,’ he told 9News.

‘Came out to see all the boys from the construction site running after some bloke.

‘I jumped off my balcony and tried to help out.’

Sergeant Mitch Grey said while he wouldn’t encourage the public to perform citizen’s arrests, the tradies had ‘done a great job’ bringing the man into custody.

Police said the Ford Mondeo was allegedly stolen from a Bilambil Heights address in  NSW’s Tweed Shire, just under 30km from Broadbeach, on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old man was wanted by Queensland Police before his arrest on Friday.
